The University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) Flexible Array of Radars and Mesonets (FARM) consists of the Doppler on Wheels (DOW) radars, mobile mesonets, mobile upper air sounding systems, disdrometers, and ruggedized deployable instrumentation Pods in service to the scientific community.
The mobile radars have pioneered fine-scale mapping studies of severe, hazardous, and high impact weather, including tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, and winter weather, substantially advancing our knowledge of these phenomena.
We will highlight research findings such as what we know about tornado formation and intensification, tornado wind speeds near the ground and how those relate to damage, the three-dimensional hurricane winds at landfall and how those winds map to the surface, and small-scale features, such as vortices and wind shifts in wildfires, which may impact wildfire spread and firefighting efforts. In addition, we will overview how the DOWs have targeted a myriad of other weather phenomena.
